Our Story

Rooted in Chicago, Growing With You

GreenHerb Life began as a windowsill full of clippings and became a full-fledged botanical boutique serving plant lovers across the United States.

"I never set out to run a plant shop. I set out to prove that a small room, a wide window, and a few living things are enough to change how a person feels about their day." — Clarence Singleton, Founder

How GreenHerb Life Started

GreenHerb Life was founded in Chicago by Clarence Singleton after years of quietly sharing cuttings with neighbors, friends, and strangers who stopped him on the sidewalk to ask about the trailing pothos in his apartment window. What began as an obsession — reading soil textbooks after work, converting a spare bathroom into a propagation station, driving across state lines to meet independent growers — slowly turned into something bigger. In 2018, we opened our doors on West North Avenue in the heart of Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood, and we've been growing ever since.

Our shop was built on one belief: that the small, daily ritual of caring for a living thing is genuinely good for people. It slows us down. It makes us look up from screens. It teaches patience, humility, and the quiet joy of watching something grow because we paid attention.

What We Do

We are a botanical boutique, not a warehouse. That distinction matters. Every plant in our collection is chosen personally, quarantined before it joins the shop floor, and cared for daily by people who actually know its name. We specialize in:

Our Values

Slow Growth Over Fast Sales

We would rather sell fewer plants and know each one is going to a good home than push volume for its own sake. Our team is trained to ask questions before recommending: How much natural light does your space get? Do you travel often? Are there pets or small children? A healthy match between plant and person is our real product.

Honest Sourcing

We work exclusively with small and mid-sized U.S. growers who share our standards for humane labor, ethical propagation, and low-impact horticulture. We know the greenhouses our plants come from by name, and we visit them.

Genuine Care, Long After Checkout

The relationship doesn't end at the register. Every plant leaves the shop with a personalized care card, and we answer support emails personally — no chatbots, no scripts. If something goes wrong, we want to know, and we'll help you fix it.

Community Before Commerce

We host free repotting workshops on weekends, contribute plants to local schools and community gardens, and partner with Chicago non-profits focused on urban greening. This shop only exists because our neighborhood believed in it first.

Meet the Founder

Clarence Singleton is a lifelong Chicagoan, a self-taught horticulturist, and the person most likely to be found watering the shop's ferns at 6 a.m. before the doors open. Before founding GreenHerb Life, Clarence spent a decade in logistics, which turns out to be surprisingly useful when you're shipping living things across the country. He believes plants are for everyone — every budget, every experience level, every kind of home — and he built this business around that idea.
